Training

All fostering service providers are expected to ensure that Foster Carers are trained in the skills required to provide high quality care and meet the needs of each child or young person placed in their care. This is highlighted in the Fostering Services Regulations 2002 Part III and Minimum National Standards, Standard 23.

As a Foster Carer, you are expected to attend all relevant training. This should include:

  • pre-approval training ie Skills to Foster
  • induction training ie working in partnerships
  • ongoing core training ie safe caring.

You should also be provided with the opportunity to attend:

  • ongoing specialist training ie men who foster, working with challenging behaviour
  • professional vocational training ie NVQ level 3

If there are two adults in the household approved as Foster Carers you are both expected to complete the relevant training.

Fostering service providers are expected to organise training to facilitate your attendance ie evening, weekends.

An appraisal of your training and development needs should be included on an annual basis as part of your Foster Home Review. Many fostering agencies keep a training profile on your file so that all the training attended can be tracked.  Some providers will increase the reward element of the money you receive based on your developing skills.
